Prayer Leader Tips

Be led by the Spirit of God The Holy Spirit is the great counselor, friend, King, and helper. Although there are a great many deliverance resources, structures, anointings, giftings, books, opinions, etc, let Holy Spirit be the leader before, during, and after anything else.

Do not fear

Fear is the “gateway drug” of spiritual warfare. So do not fear, instead embrace the Love of God (1 John 4:18). We have terrestrial authority (Genesis 2) and spiritual authority given by Jesus over the powers of darkness residing in humans. As Christians we are called to advance the Great Commission. Let Holy Spirit be the leader, and discern when not to pray for someone based on what He says, NOT based on what kind of demon they have. As you grow in authority more will be required of you, repentance will come often and obedience will be normalized.

Beware of fatigue

Keep resting/abiding in the Lord as a primary component of your Christian lifestyle and will also help ensure you do not get burnt out or exhausted doing ministry. But also take attention to pacing yourself for your day. Spiritual warfare is labor, and you will feel tired physically and mentally. The rewards are great! Make sure to keep your schedule as flexible as is possible and stay in a rested posture with the Lord.

Don’t get “demon vision”

Discerning spirits and diving headlong into helpful deliverance resources can be exciting and engulfing. Remember that the Christian walk is foundationally about JESUS. As soon as spending time with God to just rest and be near Him sounds less exciting than reading a book about deliverance…repent and go back to your worship closet! Get grounded in Holy Spirit first, always keep Him the priority.

Beware Religious Spirits

When you begin to operate in deliverance and inner healing, you get a dramatic increase in spiritual discernment and understanding of the realm around us. That Knowledge coupled with going deep through your own inner healing process, the kingdom of darkness is left with fewer options for you. One of the best and most effective tools the enemy has to use against you at that point is various types of Religious spirits. The greatest danger is a “mindset sin”. To build a stronghold for the enemy in your way of thinking. Often ministers will begin to see themselves as never wrong prophetically, as always discerning perfectly, or simply building a theology around something God doesn’t want. If you are laughing to yourself right now thinking, “I am too anointed and close to God to possibly be influenced by a religious spirit. I cast them out of people all the time!”…I would suggest humbling yourself before God and asking for a greater revelation of just how much we need Him. Pride and religion go hand in hand.

Do not war against principalities

Be very cautious attempting to pursue anything in the “2nd Heaven” realm. It is not in our terrestrial authority, and I have consistently seen demonic attack/kickback occur to the persons involved. I would assume that if high level principalities are ever even addressed directly by humans in warfare, it would be by the very direct and strategic leading of the Holy Ghost.

Love and Compassion

It goes without saying that deliverance can be a difficult, emotional, vulnerable process. Our job is to help them keep the focus on Jesus and the freedom He is bringing, and to make them feel valued and secure as much as possible by communicating and behaving in a way of honor, respect, and compassion. This is especially true with those that refuse prayer or fail to be completely willing. Nothing will drive them further away from freedom in those interactions than judgment. Jesus is King, and He is the rightful Judge. Jesus Himself walked in incredible compassion. We must never let frustration at a persons character or their current spiritual state dictate our love for them. God’s love never changes, and never fails…neither should ours.

Ask Holy Spirit to speak!

Especially to speak to anyone directly involved who is not leading a deliverance or other meeting. God loves leading us, and loving us. I have so consistently seen God give the next step to the very person having a unclean spirit removed from them, it feels clear to me that this is something we should be sensitive to and desire. God loves to show up and speak, especially to someone still learning to be with Him. I will often simply pray “Holy Spirit, I ask you to show the next step or whatever you would like to do to (this person), in Jesus name.” Then I will tell them to just relax and focus on God and keep a blank mind. I have experienced some of the most profound breakthrough in the hardest most complex deliverances simply by doing this. God loves to be at the center of our focus, leading and loving us in the midst of setting us free.
